Diwali, which is the festival of light, is celebrated in autumn and this year it is celebrated on 7th November 2018. Those who are not Hindus can also participate in this festivals.

Why is Diwali celebrated?

It is celebrated because Rama, Sita and Laxman arrived home after living in the forest for 14 days. The reason why they were living in the forest because the Queen, who is Rama’s stepmother, wanted her son, Bharat, to be king but Rama was older that Bharat. As a result, she sent Rama, Sita and Laxman to the forest, hoping that they would never come back.

When they were living in the forest, Rama and Laxman went to go look for some food while Sita stayed home to look after the house. Unfortunately, Sita was kidnapped by a demon called Ravana who was disguised as an old man. rama and Laxman found out about it and went to rescue her and along the way, Hanuman (a God) and his monkeys help them. They then killed Ravana and took Sita back to the palace and Rama then became king.

What people do on Diwali?

People clean the whole house so that the Goddess Laxmi (the Goddesss of Money) would come to their house. People would then give gifts to their friends and families and sometimes invite them to their house. When its dark outside, they would start setting of fireworks.

When it is Diwali, make sure you stay safe and let your parents set off the fireworks not kids. Keep a water bucket next to you so that you could put your sparklers in the bucket to cool it down.  Also, if you have pets make sure that they are inside as most pets are frightened by fireworks.
